Let’s get straight into it … looking at the Keyboard …
- We only use the letters C, D, E, F, G, A and B
- The piano has a pattern of 2 black keys and 3 black keys
- All the letters follow the same pattern
- C is to the left of the two black notes
- F is to the right of the three black notes
Music History & Theory
- A piano has 88 keys in total. The lower part of the keyboard has 1 string for each note, 2 strings for the middle range and 3 strings for the upper section of the keyboard
- Traditional pianos (acoustic, not electric) make their sound when a key is depressed
- By pressing down a key, a hammer is forced up to hit strings that are stretched vertically (in a normal piano) or horizontally (in a grand piano)
- This is important because acoustic pianos require a heavier touch compared to keyboards. To prevent sore wrists always keep your wrists above the notes with your fingers curved.
- Grand pianos have as much as 3x more wire, allowing a bigger sound
- From one letter to the same letter 8 notes up or 8 notes down is called an octave (Ex: C to the next C)
- An octave is a kind of interval or distance between notes. (Hint: to remember octave, think of “Oct” to mean 8, like an octagon.)
- The most important key is Middle C (look for a C in the middle of your keyboard)
- Everything to the right of Middle C gets played by the Right Hand
- The keys that are to the right are higher in pitch – they sound higher
- Everything to the left of Middle C gets played by the Left Hand
- The keys that are to the left are lower in pitch – they sound lower and deeper
