Learning to read music is an important part to playing the piano.

Here’s an easy way to help you get started …

  • Music is written on 5 horizontal lines called the stave or staff
  • Always count the lines and spaces from the bottom going up
  • We use a stave for the right hand and another stave for the left hand

  • When the staves are joined by a line and a brace it is called the Grand stave
  • The grand stave shows that the music needs both hands to play

  • A dot after a note will increase its length by half. Have a look at the dotted minim.
  • A normal minim is worth 2 counts
  • ½ of 2 counts is 1 count
  • Therefore a dotted minim = 3 counts
  • Try working out how many counts a dotted semibreve is worth. 4 counts + (½ of 4 counts) = 6 counts
