Hand Eye Coordination

Exercises to Improve Hand and Eye Co-Ordination

Carl Czerny
Op.481 50 Practice Pieces for Beginners

Practice Points

  • Start slowly with both hands on the appropriate keys, and as you proceed to play, do not look down at the keys. Follow the finger numbers as you play the piece slowly.
  • As you play, try to keep the beat and continue to look forwards – any mistakes can be corrected later – it is essential to continue to play regardless!
  • Repeat the piece according to repeat signs, and upon the second playing, attempt to add in the phrasing and dynamics.

Practice Points

  • Before playing this piece, analyze it carefully, noting the left-hand chord changes.
  • As before, once the hand positions are set, they will not move to focus better on phrasing and dynamics.
  • The repeated notes that do not slurs may be played with a slightly detached touch (mezzo staccato)

Exercises to Improve Hand and Eye Co-Ordination

Practice Points

  • Before attempting this piece, familiarize yourself with the chords – they will repeat throughout the piece.
  • Allow the left hand to keep a steady and regular beat
  • Keep watching the right hand fingering to ensure correct placement, and most important of all – listen to the melody rather than continuously glancing up and down the keyboard

Exercises to Improve Hand and Eye Co-Ordination

Practice Points

  • This piece requires a different touch and focus as the left hand maintains a flowing Alberti bass.
  • Be cautious of the fingering in the right hand as the melody leaps up in intervals.

Exercises to Improve Hand and Eye Co-Ordination

Practice Points

  • The chords presented here are larger and require a firmer touch to ensure all keys are depressed evenly. The repetition of chords allows more significant focus on the melodic line in the right hand.
  • Ensure the scale runs are also executed cleanly with an even rhythm and controlled tone
  • Ensure all scale runs use the suggested (standard) scale fingering to improve coordination.

Exercises to Improve Hand and Eye Co-Ordination

Practice Points

  • As before the pulsing of the left-hand chords allows greater focus on the right-hand melody which now does require moving the hand position
  • Don’t be put off by the leger line notes – you will be able to quickly judge the interval distance by using the previous note.
