article10aThe acciaccatura (/at-tchak-ka-TOO-ra) is a form of musical ornamentation. It is also known as a “grace” note or a “crushed” note.

When written, it is a small pitched (written in the stave) quaver with a diagonal line running through it.

To play an acciaccatura accurately, you must crush the small note into the larger one by playing it quickly before falling to the principal note.

Depending on the time period of the piece of music or the composer’s instructions, the acciaccatura may be worth rhythmically half of the principal note.
